Lather, Rinse, Repeat

I recently shared with you that we were having one of our bathrooms remodeled. My background is in Interior Design so of course I was super excited to be able to have this project completed.
So how does a home remodel fit into shopping with purpose? Here are my thoughts.
1. Plan for a project & budget. I wouldn't recommend jumping into a home project by putting yourself into massive debt if possible. I would also try to consider your home style, value etc when planning for resale purposes. {For example maybe spending $100k on a small bathroom in a $200k home is not the best investment or use of funds?} But really in the end, decide what is best for YOUR situation.
2. Quality materials. By using quality materials that will last longer I can save money on maintenance and repairs in the long run. While some less expensive fixtures or materials may save you money now, if you have to replace in five years it isn't really a savings.
3. Support small business- Use an independent contractor/handyman rather than a service from a big company or store. We were able to support a small business & friend rather than give our labor costs to a corporation. Purchase as many supplies from local hardware stores to support the community. I also tried to source most of my accessories from small shops as well.
4. Energy/water saving fixtures. LED bulbs, Energy Star fixtures, toilets that use less water, water sense faucets.
5. Our surroundings can affect our mood. I don't say this just because I am a designer and love creating beautiful spaces. Even if you don't have a home that looks like a magazine, having pieces you enjoy and find ascetically pleasing can help you relax. In my mind it all ties together. If you are stressed and anxious in your home how will that affect your choices? My mood can greatly alter my ability to make the right food choice, stress shop etc.
So on to the fun stuff.
